Nació en Ciudad de México, pero Oaxaca le ha robado el corazón, la cabeza y el genio. Vive allí desde hace casi 18 años. Sus obras traslucen equilibrio, intensidad, raza y un sentido coherente de la estética. Su vinculación reciente con la gastronomía a través de la escultura (restaurante Chapulín) y el diseño de originales vajillas, como las realizadas en exclusiva para los hermanos Roca en su tour gastronómico por México, ha llamado nuestra atención y ha girado nuestros ojos hacia una nueva perspectiva del arte en la gastronomía.

¿Cómo le das nacimiento y continuidad a tus trabajos?
La mayoría de mis obras surgen a partir de proyectos. Sobre todo trabajo con arquitectos, proyectando el tipo de cosas que las personas quieren ver y con las que se sienten cómodas. En función del espacio aplico un volumen, porque hay que entender los contextos, el tipo de arte que vas a realizar y su ubicación, si la pieza va a colocarse en una esquina o en el centro de una sala.
Hay que dialogar con los espacios y las personas, esa es una obligación de los artistas, pero también el ojo debe educarse para que las propuestas se hagan interesantes, y en México cada vez hay más gente interesada en el arte.
¿Cuál es el punto de conexión entre el arte y la gastronomía oaxaqueños?
Oaxaca es un Estado de la República, pero podría ser perfectamente un país propio debido a la variedad de cultura, arte y gastronomía que posee: la cocina de la costa, de los valles, de la montaña. Además, los colores de los productos de la tierra son excepcionales, y esto se refleja en el arte, no hay más que observar el color de las sandías de Tamayo.
En tu caso uno de los principales nexos con la gastronomía fue tu participación en el diseño del restaurante Chapulín…
Los temas colectivos siempre me han interesado, así que cuando el arquitecto Rafael Sama me invitó a participar en el diseño de Chapulín,- el cual llevó a cabo gracias a Braulio Arzuaga, director de desarrollo de Grupo Presidente y gran amante del arte- , me pareció muy interesante, pues se trataba de difundir la cocina y la cultura de Oaxaca. Para iniciar mi trabajo me planteé que uno de los beneficios que ha aportado México al mundo es el cacao, que nos lleva al chocolate y este al mole; de modo que hice un mosaico con barras de chocolate, un muro oscuro con distintos relieves y formas que fue elaborado por mujeres que trabajaban en la cocina, no con barro, pero que estaban acostumbradas a crear formas. Finalmente salieron de mi taller, Los Alacranes, 14.000 piezas numeradas.
La creación de la vajilla que escogió Joan Roca para su gira en México ha hecho llegar tu nombre a muchos oídos que no te conocían, ¿cómo fue esa experiencia?
Es curioso porque, aunque parezca mentira, yo no les conocía. Yo entiendo sobre todo la cocina de Oaxaca, -siendo consciente de que está ocurriendo algo importante en torno a la gastronomía en el mundo-, así que cuando llegó Josep y me explicó su proyecto me quedé encantado. Hace 35 años trabajé con barro en productos utilitarios que me sirvieron de bocetos extraordinarios para lo que posteriormente sería mi trabajo escultórico, luego deje de hacerlo y ahora he vuelto. Cuando Josep Roca apareció con Alejandro Ruiz (chef de Casa Oaxaca), tras ver mi trabajo en Chapulín, volvió a surgir esta opción. Ellos querían algo prehispánico, y yo estudié arqueología, así que empezamos a tener un diálogo del que surgieron esas piezas inspiradas en la extracción del mundo Maya. También he hecho algunos trabajos para José Manuel Baños (Pitiona) y para el chef andaluz Alejandro Sanchez (Candela Romero en el hotel St. Regis de Mexico DF), que me pidió unos modelos completamente diferentes a partir de su concepto de las proporciones.
¿Cómo se consigue, en un país tan grande como México, despuntar a nivel internacional y qué es lo más difícil para desarrollarse como artista?
A nivel artístico dice mucho tu dedicación al trabajo. Ahora hay mucho artista relaciones públicas dedicado al marketing; otros tienen disciplina, dedicación y trabajo permanente… Y al final es el mercado el que dice si vales o no. Yo he tenido y tengo piezas fuera de México, sobre todo a través de mi trabajo con arquitectos en EEUU, Dubai, China, París… Los astros se alinean y se reconoce el trabajo cuando el artista es honesto y serio.
¿Con que te gusta modelar tus obras?
Con lo que más cómodo me siento es con el barro o con la cerámica, aunque para mí ambas son lo mismo, tierra cocida a distintas temperaturas. Para explicar por qué me expreso bien con ella debo remontarme a la Ciudad de México cuando yo era niño, donde jugaba con los montones de tierra que dejaban las construcciones. Más tarde estudié Arqueología y entré en el departamento de restauración de piezas antiguas, algunas de las cuales eran sagradas, de manera que me especialicé en ellas… Al final dejé la arqueología y me quedé con el barro.
También puede que fuera el destino, porque Adan significa en hebreo “hombre de barro”.
Te encanta vivir en Oaxaca, ¿te negarías a cambiar tu residencia?
Oaxaca tiene una cultura inmensa y tiene magia, no me iría, es donde está el corazón de mi trabajo. Para desarrollar mi trayectoria he tenido que salir en muchas ocasiones pero tengo aquí mi lugar. No me veo otra vez en la Ciudad de México, puedo salir temporadas pero nada más.
Dicen que los artistas son solitarios y de amores tormentosos… Pero tú, finalmente decidiste contraer matrimonio.
Sí, por una cuestión de madurez y porque llegaron la persona y el momento… Aunque reconozco que es cierto que el trabajo del arte es un trabajo de soledad. Hay cierta dosis de intensidad porque cuando comienzas a trabajar vas evolucionando, la mente se abstrae y estás solo. Por otro lado, te diré que los artistas atormentados y bohemios no suelen crear mucho.
¿Qué desearías hacer que aún no has hecho?
Me apasiona la escultura, hay piezas que han marcado mi pauta de trabajo, que me han ido moldeando, pero mi mejor obra aún no la he hecho. Si me preguntas algo más concreto te diré que, aunque ya hice algo enfocado al mar, me gustaría dedicarle más tiempo, crear una gran escultura.
¿Tu admiración profesional y artística a quienes se dirigen?
Son muchos, pero desde hace tiempo me dejó fascinado Eduardo Chillida, también Jorge de Oteiza, Jorge Yázpik, y por supuesto Henry Moore. Me atrae la vieja escuela, Calder, Richard Serra, o Fritz Wotruba, un escultor austriaco quizás menos conocido. Son personajes congruentes con sus obras. Otro nombre que no puedo dejar de mencionar es Francisco Toledo, de Oaxaca, grande como artista, pero también por su generosidad.
2015 fue un año imparable para el artista, exponiendo Sahuaros en el jardín del Museo de la cerámica de Andenne en Bélgica; siendo artista invitado en el evento “Las Puertas Abiertas de Belleville”, organizado por Ateliers d’Artistes de Belleville, en París. Tuvo una exposición individual en el Museo de Arte de Querétaro “Naufragio de barro, rescate implícito” y otra, Bitácora, en el marco de la semana cultural en la UNAM Campus Juriquilla Qro.
Como artista invitado ha impartido conferencias en “El saber del sabor, Oaxaca”; “Foro Paralelo Monterrey” y el taller de cerámica en la Universidad de Harvard, Boston; así como para intervenir el sofá “Mah Jong” de Roche Bobois, para exposición y subasta organizada en el Museo Franz Mayer.
En 2016 ha llevado a cabo la parte artística del patio principal en Residencias Highland Hall de la Universidad de Stanford, proyecto de Legorreta + Legorreta.
El Taller Los Alacranes de Paredes, es donde se ha llevado ha cabo la ejecución de la obra “Textil de huellas eternas”, como la ha llamado, y representa una trama textil compuesta por cerca de 4600 piezas texturizadas en las que se aprecian símbolos del México Antiguo y universales. Los mosaicos de 4×4 y 8×8 pulgadas, fueron hechos a mano en cerámica de alta temperatura cocidas a cono 9, es decir, a 1280 grados centígrados, y contó con la participación de 11 personas.
“La trama textil es como la trama de las sociedades, y cada mosaico se vuelve un libro de libros, un códice, un caminar en los saberes. Esta obra que cuenta con todas las garantías y estándares de seguridad, me implicó un reto y un crecimiento en todos los sentidos. Me siento muy honrado de que una pieza de mi creación se encuentre en una institución educativa de tanto prestigio, como lo es la Universidad de Stanford, que resguarda una de las colecciones de arte más importantes del mundo, entre ellas, de Rodin”.
