Thorsten Schmidt, el chef del espacio

A mediados de febrero de 2015,  el astronauta Andreas Mogensen y el famoso chef  danés Thorsten Schmidt se reunieron para intentar hacer realidad una idea común, la de servir la comida gourmet en el espacio.

El astronauta danés Andreas Mogensen se propuso llevar al espacio una comida gourmet en su viaje a la Estación Espacial Internacional (ISS) el 4 de septiembre de 2015. Teniendo en cuenta que los astronautas se alimentan de comida en pasta entubada, o reducciones liofilizadas para comer de un bocado, esta ilusión era prácticamente un sueño imposible.  Thorsten Schmidt quiso haceptar el reto, desarrollando la primera comida gourmet del mundo para ser disfrutada en el espacio.

Sin embargo, Thorsten se encontró con un problema. Comer en el espacio era como hacerlo con un resfriado, porque  la comida no sabe tan bien. Los alimentos no tienen el mismo gusto. Para que la experiencia tuviera un toque personal tuvo una idea, sabía que habían instalado una máquina de café en la estación espacial, así que él y su amigo el maestro Chocolatero  Palle Sørensen, (medalla de oro en el Campeonato Mundial del chocolate), crearon unas rocas de chocolate individuales parecidas a unos meteoritos, en las que introdujeron un mensaje personal de sus familias.

De este modo, Andreas Mogensen pudo ofrecer a sus colegas astronautas, en su viaje al espacio el 2 de septiembre de 2015, un menú compuesto por brisket de res acompañado de col y cebolla, postre de caramelo con jarabe de ruibarbo y ese dulce con mensaje especial. Una una nueva experiencia, muy alejada de las latas y los liofilizados.

Este experimento no se volvió a repetir, aunque Thorsten sigue investigando para lograr sabores más nítidos en la preparacion de los menús espaciales.

Solo queda decir que para el chef danés este fue el catering más caro del mundo, pues el coste total fue de 65.000 euros, para 9 comensales.
